Coastal Mammoth: The Great Seawall Of Japan
Ben Huang took three trips to the northeastern region of Japan between 2016 and 2019 to photograph the construction of 400 kilometers of seawalls by the Japanese Government. This herculean effort is in response to the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan, resulting in the 2011 tsunami that decimated this area and caused the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
This body of work is both photographic documentation and a study of the relationship between a newly formed structure and its surrounding environment.
Ben Huang has thoughtfully and tirelessly captured images that offer the viewer, with these large beautiful photographs, an opportunity to contemplate and question man's resilient efforts to literally and figuratively stem the tide of nature's forces.
