Series: Costa Rica
In 2023, an opportunity has been afforded me to step outside my comfort zone as an artist: a chance to travel to rural Costa Rica, guided by the now-retired executive director of a Canadian non-profit organization that does community development work in Central America, Horizons of Friendship. Horizons has been working for decades with grassroots organizations in Central America on community-driven development projects, and it is the only organization in Canada that works exclusively in Mesoamerica.
In Costa Rica, I had the opportunity to visit a number of communities in the province of Puntarenas, including Coronado, Ciudad Cortés, and Golfito. Some of what I saw touched on the lingering impact of multinational corporations on the landscape, as well as locally-driven economic and community development projects.
