This composite image puts a perspective on the immigrant experience after world war 2 where many left the continuing poverty of their postwar countries and came to Canada seeking a new beginning. The bottom layer is a scan of my mother's passport, while the additional layers are from the house that my grandparents once lived in. The topical image makes a statement about refugees and their quest to find a safe new life for their families.

Mario Cerroni (b. Priverno, Italy) is a photo-based artist producing works with classical film, historical darkroom, alternative, and digital processes. Though primarily self-taught, his work has benefited through the ongoing mentorship and tutelage of Michael Tardioli, Director of Education at the Photographic Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.

Cerroni’s photographs often explore the concepts of mortality, spirituality, and identity. His work examines the interplay between natural environments and their effects on the human psyche. He is particularly interested in how the production process informs and contributes to the aesthetic of the final image.

Cerroni has exhibited locally and internationally through a variety of shows and juried exhibitions since 2013.

Mario Cerroni is also a founding member of the 7Works Arts Collective, an association of 7 multi-disciplinary artists working together on collaborative projects.
