ARTIST STATEMENT
Painting for me is an opportunity to look for and explore the metaphor within daily life. My process involves layering images which create unexpected narratives and connections.
During the early stages of the pandemic I was living in the University and Dundas area of Toronto. This once super busy area of the city was a ghost town. The only thing there were lots of still were flowers in the flower beds along University Ave. and other downtown areas. So I started taking pictures of the only remnants of human touch...these planted flowers surrounded by grey concrete in an empty city. I took thousands of pictures of these plants and flowers, and so this is how this series started.
The person in "The Rising of Andromeda", and figurative sculpture in "Persephone" become ghosts representing the human touch and interaction which was missing.... like a ghost we were barely visible and could no longer touch.
