This one I call “Black Brownie” it is a Kodak Brownie Box Camera; the first Brownie was released in 1901, this turn of the last century camera is from 1916. It sold for $1.00 The Brownie Camera introduced the snapshot to the masses enabling us to capture all our important life moments. A truly democratic invention.
Like the camera, this portrait is very straight forward. It’s a Black Camera on A Black Velvet Background. One light source coming in from the right. The challenge was to control the exposure in order to separate the camera from the background. The real achievement is that you can find in this portrait of a mostly black object on a black background all the tones available to a photograph, from the darkest blacks to the whitest whites and everything in between.
