Bill Hornbostel

Biography

Bill Hornbostel arrived at photography through a roundabout route. He had studied painting and drawing as an undergraduate at Bard College in New York state, then used this foundation to explore photography.

Much of his photography is based on other passions such as history and a love of the natural world. Recent series have included architecture and streetscapes of Toronto, the highlands of Scotland, the French Quart of New Orleans, the natural landscape of Jasper National Park, and landscapes and streetscapes of Costa Rica.

Artist Statement

Most of my work involves long exposure photography. In working slowly, I try to convey the sense of being at peace within a frenzied world, of being unaffected by the surrounding, surging elements and of being beyond the swift passage of time.

I do not seek to merely record the world before me; the photo is merely a starting point for crafting an image. I do as much as I can to create a good negative in-camera, often using optical filters. Then I work on the image with various tools in digital post-processing, digitally brushing luminance into my images, to make a visually and emotionally compelling image in a style that I have tentatively called “luminous realism.”
