"Psyche and the butterfly"

Psyche and the Butterfly is a theme long explored by artists dating back to ancient times.  This rendition was born from a sculpture I was introduced to by the late 19th century Florentine sculptor, Cesare Lapini, when I had the pleasure of packaging it for shipment for its owners.  I spent many hours studying it and finally, with permission, took a photograph of her and proceeded to sketch.

In Greek mythology Psyche is the goddess of ‘soul’ and the butterfly is seen as the embodiment of the soul.

Like many of my drawings, they start off with an original intention and then I allow space for the composition to take on a life of its own.  This composition has undergone many months of contemplation, study and precise technical application.  All of the elements that I chose to frame her in, have come to me while I stare at her and see what comes into focus for her.  Many of the images are references from my own experience that I felt fit the overall composition and presented this cherished embodiment of the soul.

Artist Statement:
As a visual artist, I am captivated by the interplay of light within the natural world and the inherent beauty of the human body and sexuality. My work, created primarily with graphite, charcoal, colored chalk, and oil paint, reflects an eclectic range of inspirations, resulting in unique and varied imagery. I find allure in the textures of gnarled wood, the history of antiquities, and the character of old tools, which often weave their way into my pieces. The softness of the female nude juxtaposed with the strength of the male nude serves as a powerful exploration of form and presence. I embrace spontaneity in my creative process, allowing each piece to develop organically, letting the narrative unfold intuitively. This fluid approach enables me to capture the essence of my subjects in a way that is both personal and universal, inviting viewers to engage with the stories embedded in each artwork.
