Memnon was an Ethiopian king and hero in Greek mythology who fought in the Trojan War, a cousin to the Trojan royal family. He was the son of Tithonus and the goddess Eos (Dawn). After arriving to defend Troy, he killed the Greek hero Antilochus, but was subsequently killed by Achilles. His mother, Eos, was so distraught that she pleaded with Zeus, who granted Memnon immortality and turned his companions into birds called the Memnonides, which were said to fly to his tomb annually to lament his death.
