Artist's statement:
Think of Ontario as three distinct spaces: The built up, urban and industrialized region in the south, the wilderness of forest and lakes in the north and a transitional region between the two of farms, fields and pastures. These aren’t just geographic spaces. They have their own psychological space as well. There is a sense of travelling back through time as you move north from post industrial metropolis to pastoral agriculture to untamed wilderness.
I find that transitional, in-between space particularly intriguing. It’s where past and present meet. Even as city dwellers, it resonates with something inside us. Something familiar. Like a memory from childhood. Something quieter. Calmer. Grounded. Something we want to reconnect with.
These paintings are about that connection. They are about giving in to that call to sit beneath the tree in the meadow and contemplate the sky and clouds for hours.
