Bruno Lessard is a Toronto-based photo artist interested in reviving neglected forms and genres for a 21st century audience. In particular, his most recent series and exhibitions have focused on night photography, abstraction, and macro photography, which are genres and techniques that he has used within a fine arts context to challenge traditional ways of documenting the world.
Images such as “Vortex” and “The Watcher” straddle the fine line between photography and painting, and make viewers question their expectations of both art forms as they immerse themselves in such intriguing compositions featuring vibrant colours, complex forms, and residual artefacts such as sand and stone. Painterly abstraction thus meets photographic documentation in such photographs celebrating the power of macro photography to make us see the unseen.
Bruno Lessard is an Associate Professor in the School of Image Arts at Ryerson University in Toronto, where he serves as the director of the Documentary Media MFA program.
