GILLIAN LAHAV "Venus in Blanc"

24 x 24 inches with 2.25 inches deep sides

Oil and metal leaf on panel

Delicate white calla lily blossoms show off their sculptural curves and sensual texture in this botanical piece that is rich with movement and light. In Roman mythology, calla lilies, or arums, were considered so beautiful that they were the envy of Venus, Goddess of Love.

'Venus in Blanc' and other works in this series are inspired by the mystical glow of golden hour and the lushness of wild plants and feminine flowers. This composition and its colours and textures were selected to evoke decadence, referencing curving florals in Art Nouveau, the rich warmth of Klimt's Golden Phase, and the mysticism of Pre-Raphaelite dream scenes.

This work was crafted on a locally-made wood panel, layering oil paint and metal leaf over wandering grain to achieve an organic scene with lots of movement.
