Acrylic paintings on canvas

‘What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?’ is a quote from Vincent Van Gogh that underpins my intuitive exploration using all types of media, but especially acrylic paint.

Often, I start with a random layer of blacks, greys and whites. When the shapes appear, it is almost like finding the figures as Michelangelo did when releasing them from blocks of stone. I add and subtract subsequent layers until the story emerges. Sometimes I need to be very patient and, other times, the images rush in because they cannot wait to be seen.

As is evident in these paintings, I embrace vibrant colour and that may be what first attracts you. But as you contemplate each magical scene, you begin to ask questions. Who are these women? Can you hear the whispers? Do you want to join the party?

In my work, there is often an absurd juxtaposition of animals and figures in surprising surroundings. I invite you to be entertained and delighted, and I hope my sense of humour always comes through in my images.

Kahlo, Carr and Klimt, as well as Van Gogh, Basquiat and Miro are a few of the artists who have inspired me through both their otherworldly work, and bold approaches to life. - Gail Williams
