Mary Ann Slater
This collection of new paintings by Mary Ann Slater is titled Reflection. It is a body of work that evokes memory, self reflection and hope for the future.
Reflection speaks not only to the light captured in the work but the moment of consideration that the paintings encourage. The subjects of these works each have their own story. Unaltered from the condition in which they were found, their past use is apparent in the worn edges and small imperfections. These small details and a bold colour palette bring the objects to a new light, triggering memories of past experience, allowing the narrative to move beyond the canvas. Reflection includes Upcycle, the first piece in a new series. Combining discarded manufactured items and new growth, it examines the impact of our current food systems and nature’s capacity for healing.
This body of work encourages the viewer to reflect on their past, enjoy the present and to consider what may lie ahead.
