Series Title: Inversion

In this series, I limit my study to the sphere and the cube. As it is with scientific enquiry, I begin with the indubitable premise that they are essential truths in the study of three-dimensional form. We can’t have one without the other. I then go on to arrange them in an isometric system to see how far pure geometry can be pushed until it accrues complexity. I push it until the system breaks down. The eye is hard-wired to recognize platonic shapes. With the addition of depth to the picture plane, a competing image begins to surface. Compositions acquire new meanings as the subtractive process reveals familiar environments, recognizable stairs, doors, chairs. The works, seen together, elucidate the prototypes housed in the human psyche and their role in the architecture of reality. - James Maxwell
