BIG BACON BURGER
(Big Bacon Burger)
Fast Food, Slow Art
The iconic hamburger has long been a symbol of fast food, which itself is a manifestation of consumerism. One of the defining characteristics of our consumerist culture is the desire for instant gratification—we have neither the time nor the patience to wait for that which we covet. Food is no exception. Fast food has met that desire; we want, we order, and we receive within minutes.
By elevating the hamburger to the status of subject in a work of art, I transform the hamburger into food for contemplation, challenging the viewer to slow down and spend as much time with it as he would spend appreciating art. By using photorealism, one of the most time-intensive forms of painting, I draw further attention to the speed at which this subject, the hamburger, is typically obtained and consumed.
