SOLO SHOW

These are works made in quarantine, made while people were dying of Covid-19, made while the world was divided and fighting to defund brutal and racist institutions, while the world was acknowledging the murder of black men and women by police, at a time where what used to matter seems so different from what matters now. These paintings are me reacting to images of authority from the history of Western European art. These are not copies rather me using these historical works as a scaffolding, removing and abstracting them to give them new meaning. So much of this show was motivated by challenging institutions of past power and colonization, while respecting the masterful way these works were painted. This body of work was also moving away from strict portraiture, allowing the works to get more loose and having a sense of depth and place. - Mike Rachlis
