My landscape paintings are a direct response to the feelings that a place elicits in me, and most of the smaller pieces are painted en plein air in oil paint. I like exploring the rich, heavy texture of the paint, often building up thick impasto effects or scratching through the wet paint to create shapes and textures. Oil paint can have an almost sculptural quality, especially when mixed with cold wax, giving it even more body and substance. I find that the heavy textures of the paint suggest the rugged aspect of many of the landscapes that inspire me. - Mark Craig
