Algonquin Creek Red
60 x 48 inches
oil on canvas
I painted this piece from sketches and photos from my canoe trip this summer in Algonquin Park. On our last day, we had to portaged this creek in and out all day and I fell in love with it, it was beautiful.
I have painted with hot colours for the foreground rocks and water. This is unusual and I like this painting because of this difference. The bright browns, cadmium reds and fluorescent pink really bring movement and life to the water.
The viewer is pulled to the horizon through the copper dynamics of this shallow creek. The foreground boasts thick impasto titanium white straight from the tube, slathered with the pallet knife. I love everything about paint and embrace it fully with this painterly foreground which I evolve into a rushing creek through the Algonquin wilderness.
