Cabbagetown is a very old neighbourhood in Toronto, named for the sight of cabbages growing on the small front yards of the homes of the Irish. The second of two house paintings in Brandon Steen’s ‘GORTA MÓR’ series is number 165 Ontario Street. An example of a brick worker’s cottage that dates back to 1872 when it’s first owner Irishman Mr. Horan lived in it. In fact, you can see his name tagged in the painting to the right of Morrígan the Irish Wolf painted running to symbolize the Irish eventually moving on from Cabbagetown.
